Gomez was surprised to receive England call-up

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has admitted that he was surprised to have received an England call-up, Goal reports.

It was a surprise. I wasn’t expecting the call-up but it was great news for me and my family, all of those close to me, and it is a dream come true.

The youngster has been called up by Gareth Southgate ahead of England’s upcoming friendlies over the next week. This is Gomez’s first ever senior call-up, and he’ll be hoping to feature in the two games over the break.

England welcome Germany on Friday night, before facing Brazil on Tuesday next week.

Gomez was one of many young players to be called up by Southgate in the new-look England squad, helped by an injury crisis. Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have also been given the nod.

Ex-Charlton defender Gomez spoke of how it’s a dream come true to have been recognised by the England staff at senior level, following some impressive performances for the country’s Under-21 side.

It means a great deal for me personally. It has obviously been a dream of mine since I was a kid to represent my country at senior level.

Gomez has been in good form for Liverpool this season, displaying his versatility by playing across the back four on several occasions.
