Liverpool defender Joe Gomez wants to stay at the club, rather than leave on loan this summer.
The Liverpool Echo reports that the player will turn down interest from Brighton in order to stay and compete for a place in the first-team squad at Anfield.
Gomez says he is hoping to impress Jurgen Klopp during pre-season:
My main aim is to play here for Liverpool and under this manager. My target is to get regular football and I want to play at the top level and that’s what I am focused on at the moment. I feel 100%. I know that this pre-season is a big opportunity for me to hit the ground running again.
The report suggests that the defender’s immediate future will depend on the club’s pursuit of Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.
Should Liverpool complete a deal for the Dutch defender, Gomez falls further down the pecking order and may be forced to leave the club temporarily.
However, if they fail to land the central defender, his chances of first-team football at Anfield will be boosted.
Gomez is returning to football after rupturing his ACL, which left him sidelined for nine months, so regular first-team football will be key to getting his development back on track.
