Keita tests negative for COVID-19 – but should he start Merseyside derby?

Naby Keita has now tested negative for COVID-19, according to journalist Amadou Makadji on Twitter.

The Guinean reportedly tested positive over the weekend, seemingly ruling him out of action for two weeks while he self-isolated.

There has been a twist in the story, however, and Makadji claims Keita will now return to Liverpool and undergo another test.

Thiago and Sadio Mane are already back in training after self-isolating and the hope is that their teammate will be able to join them.

If Keita is available for selection at Everton this weekend, I wouldn’t actually choose to start him.

While the 25-year-old’s performances have been largely good since the restart back in June, he is still not consistently excellent and there are better options at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal.

Both Thiago and Jordan Henderson are back in the fold and raring to go, and I would stick both straight back into Liverpool’s midfield, alongside Gini Wijnaldum.

Some may think that handing Thiago his first-ever Reds start in a derby is risky, but he has the experience and quality to handle the occasion.

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez needs a little spell out of the side after a poor start to the season, so moving Fabinho into defence next to Virgil van Dijk, where he excelled against Chelsea, is the logical alternative.
