Keita the latest Liverpool player to test positive for COVID-19

Keita the latest Liverpool player to test positive for COVID-19

Naby Keita has tested positive for COVID-19, according to journalist Amadou Makadji on Twitter.

It means the Guinean has become the latest Liverpool player to be affected by the coronavirus, suffering the same fate as Thiago and Sadio Mane.

Keita will now have to self-isolate for two weeks, meaning he will miss next Saturday’s Merseyside derby clash with Everton at Goodison Park.

The 25-year-old will also be absent for Liverpool’s Champions League opener away to Ajax on October 21st.

This is a big blow for Keita, who has gradually become an established part of the Reds’ midfield, starting every Premier League game so far this season.

This absence will ruin the momentum he has found, and with Thiago and Jordan Henderson available for the Everton game, he could find it hard to win his place back.

I think this news further raises question marks about this international break even taking place, with players heading off to all corners of the globe and risking testing positive.

It now means Liverpool will have to make do without a key man for a sustained period – the fact that Guinea were only playing two friendlies, against Cape Verde and Gambia, means it was even more avoidable.
