Klopp gives update on Woodburn’s future

Jurgen Klopp has given Liverpool supporters an update on the future on youngster Ben Woodburn.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Klopp admits the Welshman must continue his development at Anfield after being on the fringes of the first-team squad this season.

“I know what we want to do but I will not talk about this now. It is not about keeping a position for them – they are too young for this. They have to develop, they have to learn. They have 17-year or 18-year careers ahead of them.

“They need to be prepared for the moment when they are really proper players and until then we use them when we need to. We involve them when we think they are ready.

“It should not be the case that we are relying on them for next season, but there will always be space for them to perform in a few matches if they are ready in this moment.”

Woodburn is one of the most highly thought of young players at Anfield and has been handed a number of chances in Klopp’s side this season.

The Welshman became the youngest player to score for Liverpool when he came off the bench in the League Cup to score at Anfield against Leeds back in November in front of the Kop.

Young players may consider loan moves away from the club in the future in the search of regular first-team football, but staying involved in with the club and learning from the senior players may be the best option for the 17-year-old, who has made eight appearances for the club this season.
