Liverpool midfield target with £129m release clause ‘determined to leave club’ this summer

Liverpool have received some encouraging news regarding one of their many reported targets this summer.

The Reds are currently linked with a bountiful of midfielders including Youri Tielemans and Barcelona’s Pedri.

With Georginio Wijnaldum heading for the exit door after agreeing a deal with PSG, the Reds will need to find a replacement.

Last week had seen the club linked with a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saúl Ñíguez.

The report suggested that the Reds were ready to rival Manchester United for the 26-year-olds signature.

However, the latest news from Saúl’s camp is more than encouraging for the Reds, but could still provide an issue.

According to Mundo Deportivo, as cited by the Liverpool Echo, the Spaniard is determined to leave the club.

Saúl featured very little for the club compared to previous seasons last campaign, with just 22 league starts.

With little game time, the midfielder is looking for a fresh challenge according to the reports.

However, one of the biggest issues with a deal for Saúl is his release clause in his contract.

As the Liverpool Echo states, Atletico currently have a £129million release clause in the midfielders contract.

One of the positive aspects of this though, is that they are prepared to listen to lower offers.

The La Liga champions could be tempted by a fee as low as £69million, a significantly lower price than his release clause.

Despite the lower asking price, the fee will likely still pose an issues for the Reds given their limited finances.

Player sales will dictate the clubs further activity in the transfer market – so time will tell on the Saúl rumours.

matchday.
