Less than a year on after redeveloping and expanding the main stand at Anfield, Liverpool are eyeing further expansion of their stadium to see the capacity exceed 60,000, according to the Liverpool Echo.
With planning permission having been in place since 2014, ‘Phase Two’ of the Anfield development would reportedly cost anywhere between £40-45m and add around 5,000 extra seats.
Building on Anfield Road will need to be completed by August 2019 before planning permission expires on the expansion.
Liverpool’s chief operating officer Andy Hughes has revealed that the club are focussed on expanding Anfield to reap the rewards.
“We always said that we would complete the Main Stand and assess its success before looking at any development for Anfield Road,” Hughes told the Echo.
“Anfield Road provides an opportunity to further develop our stadium in the future and the club’s position is that we’re going to start exploring the viability.
“We will follow the same robust process for Anfield Road as we did for the Main Stand. We are currently working on design, feasibility, cost, capacity and economic viability options.
“Only once we have completed this comprehensive process and come to a conclusion that it will be the right time to move forward with any development programme.”
Liverpool have permission to expand Anfield Road by an extra 4,800 seats but they’re currently exploring other options to see that number increase slightly as they edge closer to the 60,000 mark.
