Liverpool put all their eggs in the Virgil van Dijk basket during the summer transfer window and their failure to bring in the Dutchman left them shorthanded at the back and the leaky defence has plagued Liverpool’s start to the season in both the Premier League and Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp will look to address the defence when the January transfer window opens up and the belief is that the Reds will consider making a move for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.
De Vrij was linked with a summer move to Anfield and is an international teammate of van Dijk’s, but he remained at Lazio despite interest from abroad.

With his contract expiring at the end of the season, de Vrij is keen to move elsewhere and is refusing to sign an extension with the Serie A club unless it features a release clause.
Valued at €25m, de Vrij is free to hold pre-contract talks with clubs from January and the Reds could strike a deal to sign him next summer, much like they did with Joel Matip when he was at Schalke, should Lazio be unwilling to sell the centre-back outright.
