After their pursuit of Southampton star Virgil van Dijk ended on a sour note, Liverpool have reportedly been considering a move for Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.
The Netherlands international has just one year to run on his contract with the Serie A club and it was reported that he’s close to penning a new deal with Lazio.
However, those reports appear to be wide of the mark as it’s now being claimed that he’s yet to sign a new contract with the two parties still at loggerheads regarding a release clause.
While wages are near enough agreed upon with de Vrij, the defender wishes to see his new deal possess a release clause standing at just €15m.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito is unwilling to agree to those demands as he sees that figure to be well below the player’s true value and it could be an easy escape route for him.
Liverpool are monitoring developments closely as they consider lodging a bid for the 25-year-old.
