Liverpool plotting shock move for Chelsea player ‘untouchable’ under Xabi Alonso

Liverpool still have some glaring holes to fill under Andoni Iraola.

The elephant in the room is signing a replacement for Mohamed Salah, but a closer look at their defensive options will tell you that they could do well with a few additions there.

Virgil van Dijk is 35 and Joe Gomez has struggled with injuries, while Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni have zero Premier League experience between them.

The Reds’ current full-back options are Milos Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas, Jeremie Frimpong and an injured Conor Bradley, which, once again, is hardly inspiring.

The Liverpool Echo reported recently that Liverpool are on the lookout for a versatile defender who could cover multiple positions.

And their search has taken them to Chelsea, with Josh Acheampong one of the players they are keeping an eye on.

Liverpool want Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong

Chelsea’s academy has produced some outrageously good players in recent years and Liverpool know that quite well, having nabbed Rio Ngumoha from the Blues under Arne Slot.

The 17-year-old is well and truly a first-team player now and is expected to kick on this season under Andoni Iraola.

TEAMtalk report that Liverpool are really interested in signing Acheampong, but new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso deems him as one of the ‘untouchable’ assets of his squad.

The young Englishman is capable of playing right back and in central defense, which could be invaluable to Alonso’s system.

The report also mentions that the Reds are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig’s Lutsharel Geertruida and Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nnamdi Collins as fallback options if their pursuit of Acheampong fails.

As we mentioned earlier, Alonso is keen to hold on to the 20-year-old, with the report also stating that only a massive bid will force Chelsea to reconsider.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Illia Zabarnyi, with the Ukrainian defender one of the candidates to leave PSG this summer.

Iraola knows him quite well after they worked together at Bournemouth, but it remains to be seen if the Reds press ahead with their interest.
