Liverpool should make audacious move for Harry Kane, says Stan Collymore

Liverpool should make an audacious summer move for Harry Kane, according to Stan Collymore.

The Reds are currently licking their wounds after losing 4-1 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, all but ending their Premier League title chances in the process.

There is an increasing feeling that major reinforcements are needed at the end of the season, allowing Jurgen Klopp to freshen up his squad.

Writing in The Mirror, the former Liverpool striker said that Kane or Robert Lewandowski should be targeted if City snap up Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Collymore said:

You have to look at these things over four or five years and Liverpool will still be in the title talk in each of them.

That said, they do need to wake up and smell the coffee, which means owners FSG spending money to go toe-to-toe with City in that period.

It means that if City go out and buy Erling Haaland this summer then Liverpool must buy the next Robert Lewandowski or even put in a bid for Harry Kane.

There is no denying that Kane is a world-class striker, as evidenced by his staggering £108m valuation on Transfermarkt, but it is extremely difficult to see him joining Liverpool.

The England captain turns 28 this summer, making him just a year or so younger than the Reds’ current front-three, so he wouldn’t represent the long-term future.

Not only that, but Kane would likely cost an astronomical amount and Tottenham are unlikely to sell him to a direct rival.

Collymore is right in saying Liverpool must match City in the transfer market and not let them pull away, but younger alternatives should be looked at.

If Haaland goes to the Etihad, Kylian Mbappe is arguably the other most exciting young attacking player in the world, having scored 108 goals in just 150 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, not to mention 16 in 39 caps for France.
