Liverpool tipped to re-sign Javier Mascherano

Liverpool’s defence has been heavily scrutinised in recent times for leaking sloppy goals, and it’s no surprise that Jurgen Klopp will look to address the issue in the January transfer window.

Southampton star Virgil van Dijk remains a top target while Lazio centre-back Stefan de Vrij is also on their shortlist, the Reds have been made the favourites by the bookies to sign a certain Barcelona star.

Javier Mascherano has been linked with a sensational return to Anfield – seven and a half years after he left the club for the Nou Camp.

The veteran defender began his career as a central midfielder and joined the Reds on loan in February 2007, a move that was made permanent at the end of that season.

Mascherano was a fan favourite in the three years he spent at the club but has since made the move to centre back in his time in La Liga.

Under contract until 2019, the Argentina international has started just five La Liga games this season which has led to speculation about his future.
