Liverpool waiting for Southampton to welcome Van Dijk bids

Liverpool are preparing to make a club-record bid for Virgil van Dijk, but only if Southampton give them the go-ahead to do so.

According to a report from the Daily Mail this evening, the Reds have lined up an offer for the Netherlands international this summer but are keen to tread carefully in negotiations with Saints given the public tapping up saga that surrounding their pursuit earlier on.

Van Dijk himself has gone on strike at St Mary’s, and has refused to play in the club’s pre-season matches. This means that he will not travel to France with the Saints squad for their training camp, and he will subsequently miss their match against Saint-Etienne on Saturday.

The Dutchman is training on his own and has made it clear to Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino that he is keen on securing a move to Anfield.

The report states that Saints and Liverpool are back in contact, which is sure to be a boost, and also a relief, for the Reds as they look to land one of the Premier League’s best central defenders.
