Liverpool’s wage bill exceeds £200m

Liverpool have certainly been competing at the top of the Premier League on the field, but off it, they haven’t always been able to compete at the same financial level of their peers.

In the 12 months leading up to May 31st, 2016 though, Liverpool have seen their club wage bill skyrocket by over 25% to £208,258,000 – exceeding the totals of both Arsenal and Manchester City in that period the Liverpool Echo have revealed.

There are many contributing factors to this increase in expenditure.

Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers and relieved most of his backroom staff of their duties, paying them off in the process, and bringing in Jurgen Klopp and his staff to replace them, effectively paying two sets of staff to do the same job over this period.

In the summer of 2015, Liverpool spent big in the transfer window, bringing in the likes of Christian Benteke, James Milner and Roberto Firmino, all of whom immediately became some of the club’s top earners receiving in excess of £100,000-a-week. Nathaniel Clyne, Danny Ings and Marko Grujic all also joined the club and are earning sizeable pay packets.

A dozen academy graduates were handed new professional contracts which would see their earnings receiving a sharp rise, all contributing to the net outlay on wages.

The increased wage bill contributed to Liverpool’s pre-tax loss of almost £20million during a year when revenue increased by £3.9million to £301.8m.

Total members of staff at the football club shot up from 636 to 700 between June 2015 and May 2016 – 500 are in ‘administration, commercial and other’ with 139 ‘players, managers and coaches’ and 61 ‘ground and maintenance staff’.
