Even with their stance that Philippe Coutinho would not be sold this summer, Liverpool were determined to land Monaco star Thomas Lemar before the transfer window closed last Thursday.
As the Liverpool Echo note, the Reds lodged two bids for the versatile attacker and had their medical crew on standby ready to fly over to conduct a medical but a deal was never agreed.
Arsenal were also keen on signing Lemar and reports claim they had a £92m offer accepted but the deal fell through on Deadline Day because Monaco blocked his departure with time running out to replace him.
Liverpool were only willing to go as high as £75m for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder in the summer despite the player’s interest in joining the club, according to Monaco Vice President Vadim Vasilyev.
Thomas wanted to go to Arsenal and to Liverpool, but we had discussions and we took a communal decision so that he could stay here.
He is a very important player for us. We could not have sold him, it would have affected the entire team and the individuals.
Arsene Wenger has admitted he will try again for Lemar in the future and Liverpool will likely do the same.
