OTD: Irresistible Liverpool cruise past Newcastle United

On this day (April 27) 2013, Liverpool were irresistible at St James’ Park as they earned an emphatic 6-0 win against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Unperturbed by the absence of suspended talisman Luis Suarez, Brendan Rodgers’ side were unstoppable in the Saturday evening sun in the North East.

Centre-back Daniel Agger got the scoring underway in the opening five minutes before captain to be Jordan Henderson riled the home crowd further when the ex-Sunderland man doubled the lead.

After the break, two goals in quick succession from Daniel Sturridge put the game beyond any conceivable doubt before a rare Fabio Borini strike made it 5-0 in front of the away crowd in the rafters.

Not satisfied with the scoreline, Henderson rubbed further salt in the wounds with a free-kick from a seemingly impossible angle to round off the scoring.

Ultimately the result meant very little for the Reds as they moved into seventh with three points – the same position they finished two matches later.

On the back of Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with the Magpies, this nostalgia-driven trip down memory lane should come as a reminder that happier days will return.

Jurgen Klopp will be hopeful a similar away performance is on the cards this Sunday when the Reds travel to Old Trafford to face arch-rivals Manchester United.
