Pundit backs Liverpool for UCL glory following ‘massive’ transfer

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has backed Liverpool for UEFA Champions League glory this season.

This comes in the wake of the Reds nearing a deal for FC Porto winger Luis Diaz.

The Anfield club had been linked with the 25-year-old for some time but a move for the Colombian was expected to come in the summer.

Following reported interest from Tottenham, Liverpool chose to act in the mid-season window and Kenny told Football Insider that the ace could help Jurgen Klopp’s side to a seventh European Cup.

It will be a massive signing for Liverpool and it adds to their firepower. Obviously, they already have quality players in that area and it just makes them even stronger. Liverpool know they need extra firepower if they are going to hunt down Man City. They might also have one eye on the Champions League and you would back them to win it if Diaz signs. What an exciting move for Liverpool. Their window has gone from poor to great in the blink of an eye.

Prior to the seemingly imminent switch to Merseyside, Diaz scored twice in the Champions League for a Porto side that finished third as Liverpool topped Group B.

All told the 32-cap Colombia star scored 16 times and registered six assists in 28 appearances for the Dragões – earning a superb 7.47 Sofascore rating in 18 Primeira Liga outings.

This, along with the signing itself, will be music to supporters’ ears.

Having seemingly been written off prior to Christmas, a recent upsurge in form – even in the absence of key players at AFCON – has allowed Klopp and co to dream again.

Accompanied by Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino et al. the Colombian will certainly not be short of support when it comes to firing the Reds to victory.

Everyone of a Liverpool persuasion will be hoping that the £36million valued winger can hit the ground running and indeed help to guide Klopp’s men to a successful end to the 2021/22 campaign.

matchday.
