Referees urge lawmakers to change handball rule – Liverpool will be happy

Premier League referees are urging football’s lawmakers to change the current handball rule, according to the Times.

Many fans, managers and players have been left frustrated with the rule this season, with endless penalties awarded in harsh circumstances.

Liverpool were on the receiving end of such a decision at the weekend, with Joe Gomez adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area, despite his arms being by his side.

Fortunately for the Reds, Kevin De Bruyne missed the subsequent spot-kick, but Gomez spoke openly about his frustration after the game.

It has now been revealed that the league’s referees are similarly at odds with the handball rule, with the hope being that it reverts to the previous one.

The officials are believed to be ‘disillusioned’ by some of the decisions they are being forced to make.

This report will go down well with much of the footballing community, not least Jurgen Klopp, who wasn’t impressed with the call made against Gomez on Sunday.

It feels as though there was no reason to tweak the rule in the first place, and all it has done is make a mockery of too many matches.

Going back to what it was originally will help prevent managers and players being so unhappy, not to mention taking some pressure off the referees, too.
