Southgate hints that Henderson won’t be risked against Denmark

Gareth Southgate has hinted that Jordan Henderson might not be risked for England this week, acting as a potential boost to Liverpool.

The Reds skipper started in the Three Lions’ 2-1 win against Belgium on Sunday, winning a penalty in the first half before being replaced after the break.

England face Denmark on Wednesday night but Henderson may not feature, having only managed 112 minutes of Premier League action this season because of injury.

Southgate has confirmed as much to ESPN, ahead of the final match of the international break:

Jordan is a little bit more complicated because with his club, he had 60 in his first match then 45 the following week so we are going to have to assess him very carefully.

I think Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to see Henderson left out entirely on Wednesday, with the crucial Merseyside derby clash with Everton looming.

Liverpool head to the league leaders on Saturday lunchtime and could already be without Naby Keita, who has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

I would also play Fabinho at centre-back in place of the out-of-form Joe Gomez, meaning a further gap in midfield appears.

For this reason, having Henderson available is essential, hopefully starting alongside Thiago and Gini Wijnaldum. James Milner hasn’t been on international duty, however, so he could start at Goodison Park.

More minutes until Henderson’s belt could potentially help him on Wednesday, but seeing him wrapped in cotton wool is the more preferable option.
