“Pep gives City days off!” – Van Dijk defends Slot’s training methods amid Liverpool slump

Virgil van Dijk has fired back at critics questioning Arne Slot’s decision to grant the squad time off prior to Liverpool’s bruising 3-2 defeat at Manchester United.

The Reds captain dismissed claims that a relaxed schedule contributed to the loss, defending the manager’s preparation methods despite a performance that saw the Merseyside giants humbled by their rivals on Sunday.

Liverpool would have felt confident again, heading into the Premier League clash at Old Trafford, having picked up three wins on the spin in the top-flight.

Indeed, beating Fulham, Everton, and Crystal Palace in quick succession had raised the spirit levels at Anfield, with the Reds in touching distance of securing Champions League football for next season, making the short detour to Manchester.

Unfortunately, though, the performance at the Theatre of Dreams was very Jekyll and Hyde from the away side’s perspective, as Liverpool shot themselves in the foot early on, when giving up two goals carelessly in the first half.

The Reds briefly threatened a stunning comeback in the second half, sparked by a magnificent solo effort from Dominik Szoboszlai. Momentum continued to swing in Liverpool’s favor when Cody Gakpo found the net to celebrate his 50th goal for the club, momentarily silencing the Old Trafford crowd.

However, the resurgence was cut short. A decisive late strike from Kobbie Mainoo reclaimed the lead for the hosts, leaving the traveling Liverpool supporters in despair as the match ended 3-2.

In the build-up to this tense showdown, posts on social media had indicated that Slot had gifted some of his players time off to go on brief holidays.

The lack of intensity sparked a wave of justified anger among the Liverpool faithful, with many fans arguing that the squad’s preparation for a fixture of this magnitude was nowhere near the standard required for a clash with Manchester United.

Supporters pointed to the perceived lack of focus during the training week as a key factor in the defeat. Critics suggested that the relaxed approach toward the derby suggested the coaching staff may have underestimated the challenge at Old Trafford.

With 11 defeats now on the books in the league, Slot’s preparation methods are facing unprecedented scrutiny from a fanbase used to a more relentless competitive edge.

Despite appearing uncharacteristically rusty at times during the match, Virgil van Dijk stepped up at the final whistle to address the mounting pre-match controversy. Speaking in the wake of the demoralising defeat, the Liverpool captain stood firm against the noise surrounding the team’s preparation and Arne Slot’s management.

Van Dijk’s comments after United defeat

Van Dijk has struggled to maintain his usual elite standards this season, with his future at Anfield increasingly uncertain. Much like fellow old guard stalwarts Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah, the Dutchman appears to be approaching the end of his era at Liverpool as his contract situation looms.

The cracks were evident during the 3-2 defeat. Van Dijk failed to record a single successful tackle over the 90 minutes a damning statistic as Manchester United’s frontline routinely carved through a fragile and porous Liverpool backline.

Many fans at the full-time whistle accused the players of not training properly ahead of such a big clash, owing to the likes of Alexis Mac Allister being pictured on holiday in Rome.

The Liverpool captain fought back against these assumptions when speaking to reporters at full time

He said: “I’m not sure it’s a holiday. It’s a city trip. It was only one day [away].

“But I think if you have one day off, and you don’t have many days off, they decide what they want to do with their families.

“We are not kids. Everyone is an adult. This week we have an early kick-off on Saturday [against Chelsea]. So preparation is on that. Yesterday we were in a hotel.

“Today we played. So two days away with the family again. It’s not that we have a holiday whatsoever.

“I wish we had a couple more days off at times because I think it works both ways.”

The dependable Dutch defender even cited Pep Guardiola as another justification for Liverpool being handed some time off in between fixtures.

Van Dijk’s Guardiola comments

Guardiola has been known to give his players plenty of rest in between games, and it’s clearly working wonders, as the Manchester outfit is firmly back in the Premier League title race.

In Liverpool’s case, however, with the tally of defeats for the season now up to 19 – including the Community Shield final collapse – you can see why fans would feel disgruntled by the players not being at the training ground day in, day out, working hard to resurrect their failing campaign.

Van Dijk said, when using the City manager as an example: “You see Pep Guardiola giving Manchester City three days off the last weeks in a row and they are doing pretty well. It is finding the right balance.

“I can understand if people think we are not training and, when results are not there, it could be a reason for why we are not getting results.

“Like anyone else, personally, I want this to be solved. I want us to experience what I have had over my time here.

“I want us to be successful. I want to consistent with the team, winning games, fighting. We want to get the job done.

“At the minute, we are just disappointed. Consistency is the most difficult thing in any job you do. But it is also the best way to be successful and get results.

“We have three more games now then the World Cup. We have to realise next season this season cannot be repeated. It is unacceptable.”

While he has conceded that Liverpool’s season has been “unacceptable”, Reds fans will still feel irked by several players taking time out to go on holidays, while they continue to slump in form.

Some even took to social media to voice their displeasure, with X account TaintlessRed stating: “I’ve gone on about it all season yet I still get people who don’t pay attention to our training habits *****ing at me in my mentions but Slot gives far more days off than any manager I’ve known, not just LFC managers. The guy loves holidays. It’s Slot who sets this not players.”

Likewise, another X account by the name of JohnColf voiced his disapproval: “Been like this most of the season, posing for Instagram all over European cities instead of working on their fitness as they are certainly not fit.”

The time for talking is now on the pitch, with all this off-field drama quickly forgotten about if the Reds beat Chelsea this coming weekend.

The defeat at Old Trafford has laid bare a growing rift between the coaching staff’s philosophy and the expectations of a success-starved fanbase.

While Virgil van Dijk’s staunch defence of Arne Slot highlights a unified dressing room, the stark reality of 11 Premier League defeats makes his “Pep Guardiola” comparisons a difficult pill for supporters to swallow.

For a club currently defined by it’s old guard nearing the exit and a defence that failed to register a single successful tackle against their fiercest rivals, the margin for error has evaporated.

As the captain himself admitted, this season has been “unacceptable” now, the players must ensure their actions in training translate into the “powerhouse” performances Jamie Carragher and the Anfield faithful are demanding.
