Virals: Brazilian Liverpool trio refuse Copa America participation

Brazilian Liverpool trio Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino are reportedly refusing to take part in the upcoming Copa America along with the rest of the squad.

The move comes after the major South American tournament was moved from Argentina to the nation at short notice this week.

Due to begin in just eight days time – when Brazil are supposed to face Venezuela – the tournament has been thrown into doubt with threats of a boycott from the host nation and other participants.

This comes from a report from AS, as cited by The Anfield Talk on Twitter.

Having originally been due to take place in Columbia, a third move was already an unprecedented step just days before the start date.

Any boycott from leading nations would surely see the tournament unable to take place – something that could provide a welcome boost to the Reds’ contingent.

All three Liverpool representatives are key elements of the Brazil side that would no doubt have faced rigorous tests over the coming weeks, after what was an arduous 2020/21 domestic campaign.

Cancellation of the tournament would offer a much-needed rest ahead of a return to pre-season action in July.

After Trent Alexander-Arnold was ruled out of the Euros this week with a thigh injury, Jurgen Klopp will have everything crossed that no more summer problems arise.

Five weeks off ahead of a return to the Kirkby Training Centre would be the ideal scenario for the German boss – albeit the players themselves would likely relish the opportunity to represent their nation in a major tournament.

One to keep an eye on as the situation in South America develops.

matchday.
