Gianluigi Buffon, regarded by some as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, has said that of all of the stadiums he’s played at as a visiting goalkeeper, Anfield has the best atmosphere.

Buffon played against Liverpool at Anfield in a Champions League quarter-final tie back in 2005, when he was the goalkeeper of Juventus.

Liverpool won that game 2-1 thanks to goals from Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia, both of which were scored within the first 25 minutes of the game.

When asked by Football Italia about the best atmospheres of stadiums he’s played at, the Italian legend said:

Definitely Anfield, in Liverpool. That was one of the few stadiums, along with Rangers in Glasgow and Fenerbahce in Istanbul, where there was such commotion for the first 15-20 minutes that I had trouble concentrating.

Buffon, now at Paris Saint-Germain, missed out on a second trip to Anfield earlier this season as he was suspended for the Champions League tie between the Reds and PSG, but he should face Jurgen Klopp’s men in Paris in the reverse fixture.
