Thiago could be used in defence for Liverpool at some point, according to the Times‘ Paul Joyce.
The Spaniard made a welcome return to the Reds team on Wednesday night, coming on as a second half substitute in the 0-0 draw at Newcastle United.
While Thiago was unable to prevent Liverpool from dropping two more points in the Premier League title race, his cameo was extremely encouraging.
He won all five of his aerial duels, which came as as surprise, and also completed 91 percent of his passes.
Thiago is clearly a midfielder by trade, but the reliable Joyce states that he “could be utilised in defence if necessary” moving forward.

It is an intriguing comment, with Thiago not someone you would naturally associate with playing at the back, given his diminutive frame.
His aforementioned statistics suggest he can be dominant aerially, however, and his use of the ball from deep could be an asset there.
It would surely only be an even greater defensive injury crisis that would lead to Thiago being deployed in defence, however, with the 29-year-old one of the world’s best midfielders in 2020.
His influence in his favoured role could be great between now and May and he will hopefully be spared a change in position. It is another option for Jurgen Klopp to have, at least.
