Surprise Thiago statistic emerges after Liverpool’s draw with Newcastle

One incredible statistic regarding Thiago against Newcastle United sums up his all-round brilliance as a footballer.

The 29-year-old made a welcome return to the fold on Wednesday evening, as Liverpool drew 0-0 away to the Magpies.

Thiago was introduced during the second half, and while he was unable to inspire his side to victory, his performance was extremely encouraging.

The Spaniard sprayed passes around for fun and immediately looked like opening up Newcastle’s defence with his vision.

While Thiago’s quality caught the eye the most – he enjoyed a 91 percent pass completion rate – one off-the-ball statistic was arguably just as impressive.

The former Bayern Munich won all five of his aerial duels, which given his diminutive stature, is commendable.

It is easy to label Thiago as some sort of luxury player, because of his technical expertise and aesthetically-pleasing style, but he is so much more than that.

The Spain international possesses a winning mentality and level of fight that rubs off on those around him, showing tenacity off the ball and lots of energy.

It is lazy to simply assume he isn’t a strong defensive player, but this aerial statistic proves that he is willing to excel in the less attractive aspects of the game.

Liverpool have signed a world-class player in every respect – they just need him to stay fit.
