Liverpool fans puzzled over ‘contact’ with Sokratis

The job of being a central defender for Liverpool this season has been something of a poisoned chalice as the prospective suitors fall by the wayside time and time again.

With time running out in this month’s transfer window and the Reds no closer to rectifying their defensive ailments, links to a multitude of centre-backs have emerged on a near-daily basis.

One of the more farfetched links was a move for recently-released Arsenal defender Sokratis, with The Athletic reporting that the Premier League champions had made ‘contact’ with the 32-year-old.

So far, any requests Jurgen Klopp has made for the club to sign a centre-back this season have fallen on deaf ears, meaning links with an affordable shock move for Sokratis come as less of a surprise than normal.

The deal seems unlikely as the ex-Arsenal man looks to be heading to his native Greece to join Olympiacos. However, that hasn’t stopped some Kopites from passing their scathing judgement and we’ve collated the best reactions from Twitter just for you.

One went as far as to dub Sokratis “another Adrian” and a potential piece of “panic business”, alluding to the error-prone Reds goalkeeper’s status as a veteran free agent and Premier League alumnus before moving to Anfield in August 2019:
