Danny Murphy says Liverpool ‘desperately’ need to sign a centre-back

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has added his weight to the argument behind the Reds’ urgent need to bring in a central defender before the end of the month.

After bringing to an end a 30-year hoodoo last season by lifting the Premier League, the quest to defend their crown was dealt a huge blow in the autumn with the long-term double injury blow to central defensive pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Murphy, like Jamie Carragher before him, told talkSPORT of the necessity to remedy the defensive problem in this transfer window.

He said: “The small area of concern is the lack of transfer activity when they’re so desperately in need. I don’t think you should go out and buy for the sake of it. If you can’t get the ones you want in then you don’t do it. Defensively they’re not right, are they?”

The former Reds midfielder went on to state how a centre-back arrival would hand the whole squad a ‘boost’ as Jurgen Klopp‘s side look to get back on track after a major wobble of late.

Hardly groundbreaking stuff from Murphy if truth be told, but the dissenting voices from those of a Liverpool persuasion are growing ever stronger as the transfer window heads into its final days.

Whilst the absentees haven’t seen the Reds ship goals at an alarming rate, Fabinho’s switch to makeshift defender has left a considerable void in the middle of the pitch as the Reds miss one of the most accomplished defensive midfielders in world football.

It’s unlikely that a marquee signing will be made at this juncture, with the summer window perhaps more conducive to big spending.

At this stage, an out-of-favour loan signing or an experienced free agent would suffice just to act as a stop-gap until the end of the season.
