Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been spotted catching up with ex-Red Xherdan Shaqiri ahead of a Europa League meeting.

Now manager at Rangers, Gerrard’s side were facing French Ligue 1 club, Lyon, in Group A

Shaqiri was sold this summer having spent three years at Anfield, helping the club lift the Premier League and UEFA Champions League in that spell.

Prior to kickoff, with the Swiss international starting the clash from the substitutes bench, Gerrard sought out the winger and shared an embrace.

Unfortunately for the Reds’ legend, it was Shaqiri’s new club who prevailed 2-0 at Ibrox thanks to goals from Karl Toko Ekambi and an own goal from James Tavernier.

Since arriving in France following a £9.5million switch (BBC), Shaqiri has provided one assist in two appearances.

Meanwhile, Gerrard’s side has made a strong start to their Scottish Premiership title defence and sit top of the table.

It’s always nice seeing former Anfield favourites link up after their time with the club, albeit for Gerrard it’s highly unlikely to be the last Kopites have seen of him at Anfield.

Both men left legacies on Merseyside in their own right and clearly, the friendship lives on beyond their roles for the club.

Shaqiri was a popular figure amongst the Liverpool fanbase and no doubt all would wish the Swiss winger well with his new club and beyond.

As for Gerrard, many will simply be keeping an eye on his managerial progress with a view to the legend taking the hot seat some way down the line.
