AS Roma have made a €150,000 donation to the family of Liverpool fan Sean Cox.
The Serie A side will donate €100,000 through their Roma Cares foundation, whilst the club president Jim Pallotta has made a personal donation of €50,000 to the Sean Cox fund.
Club officials from Roma flew out to Ireland late last week to meet with Sean’s wife Martina and those who are helping to manage the family’s fundraising efforts.
As well as making the initial €150,000 donation, AS Roma have also agreed to work closely alongside the Cox family on future fundraising activities.
Speaking about the donation, Pallotta said:
What happened to Sean Cox should never happen to anyone attending a football match. Our thoughts today, as they have been from day one, are with Sean, Martina and their whole family. We all hope Sean makes as full a recovery as possible.
Mauro Baldissoni, Roma’smanaging director, said:
Everyone at AS Roma was shocked and saddened by what happened to Sean Cox outside Anfield and having sat down with Martina (Sean’s wife), we wanted to make a donation that will help support Sean’s ongoing rehabilitation costs.
Mr Cox was left in a coma after he was attacked by Roma fans outside Anfield ahead of the Champions League semi-final clash against Liverpool in April and is still recovering from his significant injuries.
