Aymeric Laporte says Man City are still determined to catch Liverpool

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte says his club are not giving up hope of catching Liverpool in the Premier League title race and that they will continue to fight until the end of the season.

City had the opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the league leaders to just one point when they faced Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.

However, despite going 1-0 up inside 30 seconds, City ended up losing the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie.

That result means that Liverpool head into tonight’s game against Leicester City with the chance to extend their lead to seven points.

Even so, the Frenchman told City TV that his side will not give up the chase, despite the shock result against Rafa Benitez’s men.

He said:

It’s always disappointing when you lose because we were supposed to get closer to Liverpool and to our goal. But obviously,  we need to learn and look forward, learn about our mistakes and think about the next games. There are still 14 games left, so we are going to fight until the end. We have a great team no matter what the result was, so I am not worried about the performance and the players we have in our squad. Hopefully, we can improve and we can do better in the upcoming games. All the games are important, (Newcastle) as well. It was as important as the rest of the games ahead, but obviously, after the defeat, we are going to need an extra effort to win the following games and keep being in the title race.

Liverpool face the Foxes tonight knowing that a victory will give them a seven-point cushion at the top of the league, so Laporte and his teammates will be hoping for a favour from Claude Puel’s side.
