Chris Hughton confirms interest in Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez has struggled to really assert himself at Liverpool following his move from Charlton.

The England U21 defender suffered an ACL tear in October 2015 which ended his debut season at Anfield, and that was followed up with an Achilles injury which prevented Gomez from making his first-team return for the Reds until January 2017.

Gomez has made just 10 appearances in the last two seasons after a £4.2m switch from Charlton, including just three last season and none in the Premier League, and perhaps a loan move would be good for him next season.

The 20-year-old defender is a target for Brighton and manager Chris Hughton has been speaking to the Argus about his interest in signing Gomez this summer:

We’ve registered our interest but he’s not our player. It will be up to Liverpool. I’d like to think we are very much in the running.

With Liverpool expected to sign a big-name centre-back this summer, it’s hard to imagine Gomez getting much of a run in the first-team and a loan move to another Premier League club where he could play every week is the best move for all involved.
