Flanagan hoping for ‘fresh start’ at Anfield this season

Liverpool full-back Jon Flanagan is hoping for a “fresh start” under manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield next season after his disappointing loan spell at Burnley last season.

The 24-year-old defender made only 10 appearances for fellow Premier League club Burnley in all competitions during his loan spell last season, spending another 25 games as an unused substitute in a largely disappointing campaign for him personally.

Flanagan told Liverpoolfc.com:

I can’t wait to get started. I think it’s a bit of a fresh start. I had a few injuries [but] hopefully they’re past me now and hopefully I can kick on and show what I can do.

Flanagan has had bad luck with injuries and was once considered as one of the most promising youngsters in the Liverpool ranks.

He first broke through into the first team under Brendan Rodgers and was a major part of their title pursuit in 2013/14, but since then he has slowly drifted further and further from a starting position, which eventually led Klopp to sending him out on loan to Burnley.

The manager must have expected that Flanagan would get plenty of game time but the young defender didn’t get as much action as was anticipated.

Klopp has Nathaniel Clyne as his first choice right-back and it will be difficult for Flanagan to break into the side ahead of the ex-Southampton man.

Flanagan was among the 20 players to begin outdoor training on the first day of the Reds’ pre-season on Wednesday, where he hopes to impress Klopp enough to keep him at the Merseyside club this summer.
