Jurgen Klopp provides positive update on injury progress of Virgil van Dijk

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Virgil van Dijk is making positive in his recovery from serious injury.

The 29-year-old has been missing since the middle of October, when Jordan Pickford’s reckless tackle in the 2-2 draw away to Everton saw the Liverpool superstar suffer cruciate ligament damage.

The Reds have battled on impressively with Van Dijk on the sidelines, topping the Premier League, but they are still not the same force without him.

Speaking to reporters after Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at Newcastle United, Klopp gave an important update on the Dutchman:

Good, very good. I have no problem with talking about Virgil van Dijk. It’s very good but still a long way to go, that’s this kind of injury.

I’m happy when I see these videos, to be honest, because it just shows that he makes good progress. But it will still take a lot of time, that’s how it is.

I would like to say something else but these are the facts, unfortunately.

It is hugely encouraging to hear Van Dijk progressing so well, with his return of the utmost importance to Liverpool.

It is vital that the Reds don’t rush him back, however, given the severity of the injury, playing the long game instead.

These last few months have shown how vital Van Dijk is to Liverpool – they may have continued to win matches without him, but they have rarely looked as  secure in defence.

He is the best centre-back in the world and his eventual return will be an almighty boost for the Reds.
