Karius: “I was not to blame for Wanyama wonderstrike”

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius says he was not to blame for Victor Wanyama’s wonderstrike on Sunday.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Karius says there was not much more he could have done to prevent the situation.

Speaking to Sky Sports at full time, the German defended his actions.

There are so many bodies around, you don’t know if one of those goes for the ball or not, or heads it away. I made the decision to get the ball away, I think I still got good distance on it and we didn’t get the block on the shot.

But even from that range I would say 90 per cent of those shots at least I am able to save, but that one unfortunately not. I wouldn’t say it’s a goalkeeper mistake.

If I don’t go to it at all maybe someone taps it in. I made the decision to clear it as far as I could, and then it was a wonderstrike.

Some have been calling for Karius to either catch the cross beforehand or make better contact with the ball.

The German punched the ball to the edge of the area before Wanyama unleashed a venomous effort from range and found the top corner.

The 24-year-old can be considered unlucky to be beaten by such a strike.

Karius had performed admirably throughout the draw, making a number of important saves, including Harry Kane’s first penalty.

Despite bringing the forward down inside the box, Karius held his ground and saved Kane’s penalty as the striker aimed straight down in the middle.
