Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has revealed that his club are set to lose two young players as they’ve both agreed to sign for Liverpool.
In a podcast interview by the Roker Report, Donald expressed his frustrations as losing the two youngsters to the Reds, complaining about the process that allows ‘bigger’ clubs to poach youngsters.
Donald did not name the players, but he did explain the situation, saying:
We are having our players poached. There are two players who will go to Liverpool. We tried to keep them. We said to the parents ‘If you really want to go you have to put it in writing’. The parents have written in and said ‘Thank you, Sunderland, we want our lads to go to Liverpool’.
The Sunderland owner explained that whilst he could block a move for the time being, it would ultimately be pointless, so instead, his club will look to work with Liverpool in the hope of agreeing terms that could benefit the Black Cats further down the road.
We could turn around and make that awkward and then they will go in the summer anyway, or we can talk to Liverpool and try and get sell-ons, which they don’t have to give us. Both of those lads, because of the relationship we’ve got with Liverpool which could see some players come in the other direction, we’ve opted for a good working relationship (with). We’ve asked them if they will stay and they said no. So we made a commercial decision to try and get the best arrangement.
It remains to be seen exactly which players will be moving from the North East to the North West but what is clear is that Liverpool are continuing their policy of looking to sign the best young players in the country and bring them to the club at an early age.
