Liverpool offered chance to sign ‘underrated’ defender Andoni Iraola loves

Liverpool’s backline is in a spot of bother currently, especially after Ibrahima Konate’s departure.

Jeremy Jacquet’s arrival eases the situation a little bit, but he’s still quite young and recovering from a shoulder injury.

Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez have had their fair share of injury troubles, while Virgil van Dijk is 35 and can’t possibly be expected to play every game.

Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas are the Reds’ full-back options. And one look at that bunch tells you that they could do well with another player in that position.

In recent weeks, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Illia Zabarnyi, who only moved to PSG last summer.

And now, Alex Crook reports that the Ukrainian international has been offered to Liverpool and Chelsea.

Liverpool offered chance to sign Illia Zabarnyi

TalkSPORT confirm that PSG have offered the defender to Liverpool and the Andoni Iraola links are obvious.

The pair worked together at Bournemouth for two seasons and Zabarnyi was a key player for the Spaniard.

In early 2025, Iraola referred to Zabarnyi as an underrated player who made his Bournemouth team tick.

“Zaba for me is even easier to explain, I think,” Iraola said via Tribal Football.

“I’m not sure if we decided to change him one minute in the time I’ve been here.

“So that basically says everything about the confidence we have in him and how reliable and how robust also he is and he’s the kind of player that is very easy to coach.

“For a coach, he pays attention, he comes every day to train with a great attitude and I am enjoying also his development because now when I arrived he was a great player but quite shy.

“He didn’t talk a lot and now you see him managing everything from behind, shouting to the ones in front asking for the others and this is a show of how he’s developing and he’s becoming a more important player even for us.

“I love him personally and as a player.”

Crook has been a reliable source for Liverpool in recent years as he reportedly has close ties with Richard Hughes, so this one could have legs after all.

Zabarnyi knows the Premier League quite well and has also worked with Iraola before. Additionally, his solitary season at PSG went quite well for him as he started 26 Ligue 1 games under Luis Enrique.

If the price works out, this could be worth pursuing for Liverpool as the Ukrainian can also slot in as a right-back if the situation calls for it.
