Liverpool are set to open contract talks with Joel Matip this summer after the central defender’s impressive season, according to reports.
Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer back in 2016 but a mixture of inconsistent form and constant injuries had many people wondering if he had a future at the club.
However, Matip has played a major role in Liverpool’s impressive campaign and is likely to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Reds’ defence in the Champions League final on Saturday evening.

Matip signed a four-year contract with the Reds when he joined from Schalke, and Liverpool have the option to add-on another 12 months, meaning they could keep him on his current deal until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
However, Liverpool have been keen to reward their players with new deals when the club feels like they have deserved recognition and as such, they look set to offer Matip a new deal with improved terms.
