In truth, Alexander-Arnold was actually hugely below-par against Newcastle, with his pass the one shining light in an otherwise ineffective performance.

The youngster is not enjoying a particularly impressive run of form in general, with Andy Robertson comfortably Liverpool’s standout full-back this season.

It could simply be that Alexander-Arnold is still finding his feet again after injury, or is a little jaded, but the Reds badly need him back to his best.

By his incredibly high standards, just two assists in 14 Premier League appearances this season is not a great return.
