Tony Cascarino says Liverpool should sign Olivier Giroud

Liverpool have been urged to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud for next season by former Republic of Ireland international Tony Cascarino.

The 34-year-old netted his 11th goal of the season during the Blues’ 1-0  Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and Cascarino heralded the Frenchman as the most underrated striker in the world, telling talkSPORT:

I would say he is the best in the world of the most underrated players, There are a good few that are underrated and he’s at the top of the list.

A striker during his playing days, Cascarino went one step further and suggested that Giroud would be perfect for the Reds, adding:

Absolutely [He could play for Liverpool]. I think there are very few players that can do the Roberto Firmino role. Look, at 35 years old, he’d do a great job.

Giroud, whose contract expires in June, could be available for a free transfer over the summer and he was hailed as ‘the world’s best target man’ by former Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard back in 2018.

Whilst the stylish French forward clearly still has plenty to offer, the likelihood of Jurgen Klopp signing a 34-year-old at this juncture is farfetched, to say the least.

Perhaps had this opportunity arose last summer and Giroud been available on a free, it may have been plausible, but not as he fast approaches 35 and into the twilight of his career.

The Reds certainly need striking reinforcements, but not a short-term solution like the Chelsea veteran.
