Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City’s European ambitions can give the Reds a boost in the title race.
Speaking on Monday Night Football, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, Carragher explains why their busy schedule could play into Jurgen Klopp’s hands.
Many have questioned how Liverpool will overcome the quality of Pep Guardiola’s side, who themselves show no sign of slowing down this season. The former Liverpool defender is urging the Reds to be patient in their approach.
I think Liverpool’s hope of winning the league is in the second half of the season if City go far in the Champions League, and hope that their focus is on that, taking their eye off the ball slightly.
That’s the only chance Liverpool have got, because City are better than them. But I think for the supporters and everyone around the club, Jurgen Klopp speaks very well and so do the players about the situation – Liverpool have made a brilliant start.
Both sides are going head to head in the title race this season, with Chelsea and Arsenal both widely considered to be outside contenders.
City currently lead the way after 11 games, sitting two points above Liverpool, but with neither side yet to taste defeat this season, many are expecting one of the closest title races in recent campaigns.
