With Trent Alexander-Arnold clearly Liverpool’s first-choice at full-back, and with Joe Gomez and James Milner around as auxiliary fill-in players if needed, the chances of Ki-Jana Hoever being in The Reds’ match day squad would have been very slim, even if he was available for selection.
However, those chances have now gone from zero to none as his national team have booked a place in the FIFA U17 World Cup quarter-finals.
The Netherlands beat Nigeria 3-1 to book their place in the quarters and that game wI’ll take place on Sunday, the same day Liverpool face Man City.
Read Liverpool verdict
Hoever has only been involved in two first-team match day squads this season, so unless the Reds had a few untimely injuries between now and Sunday, he probably wouldn’t have been in contention to even make the bench against City anyway, so his loss for the game shouldn’t impact Liverpool at all.
Hopefully, Hoever can play well for the Netherlands in his remaining games at the U17 World Cup then come back to Melwood full of confidence, ready to make a push for a regular first-team role.
