In recent weeks, a lot has been said about Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool career so far.
Sure, the German international will be the first to admit that he hasn’t set the world alight since his big-money move to Anfield last summer.
However, certain pundits and former players – ones we won’t name – have gone overboard with their criticism of the gifted 22-year-old in recent weeks.
And Andoni Iraola’s latest comments on Wirtz will likely shut those people up once and for all.
Florian Wirtz backed to succeed at Liverpool
Wirtz has started both Premier League games under Iraola so far and wasn’t at his best against Newcastle.
However, against Nottingham Forest, he had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside call, provided an assist for Victor Munoz and was involved in most good things Liverpool did in the second half.
And speaking after the game, Iraola singled him out for special praise, adding that he has no doubts over his quality.
“Florian is very good, I trust him a lot,” said the Spaniard in his post-match press conference.
“We have to find the best way to use him. His position from my side is very clear. I have very little doubt about him.”
If Wirtz finds his feet under the new manager, he can take Liverpool’s gameplay to another level. And it goes without saying that Iraola’s comments will come as music to the ears of the Anfield faithful.
