Liverpool were left frustrated in Denmark as they failed to sign off from the Champions League group stages with a win against FC Midtjylland.
Jurgen Klopp named a surprisingly strong side to face the Danish champions, albeit tinged with debutant Leighton Clarkson and players returning to full fitness such as Naby Keita and Trent Alexander-Arnold – who captained the side for the first time.
The night started in perfect fashion for the Reds when Mohamed Salah capitalised on a mistake at the back to run clear before eventually, somewhat fortuitously, squeezed the ball underneath the ‘keeper to give Klopp’s side the lead.
However, the hosts grew stronger and after Fabinho had cleared off the line the confidence was up.
In the second-half, the Brazilian centre-half was replaced by another debutant teenager – Billy Koumetio.
The Reds fought valiantly but when Caoimhin Kelleher brought down Anders Dreyer a penalty was awarded – after much VAR deliberation Alex Scholz eventually fired the penalty past the Irish stopper.
One disallowed goal apiece later, Takumi Minamino’s particularly unfortunate as the officials adjudged Sadio Mane to of handled in the build-up despite it looking as though a defender had done so, and the game finished 1-1.
Through and top of the group as well as some valuable minutes in some legs.
Here’s how we rated the Reds…
