Markovic’s move to Anderlecht fell through over wage demands

Markovic’s move to Anderlecht fell through over wage demands

Belgium giants Anderlecht have blamed Lazar Markovic for his failed transfer to the club on the European transfer deadline day, according to Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur.

Liverpool were eager to offload Markovic and had reportedly agreed on a £2.9m deal with Anderlecht on 31st August, only for the move to break down due to the midfielder’s high wage demands.

To leave the Merseyside club, Markovic would have needed to take a big pay cut and ultimately, he was not ready to do so.

Markovic only has one year remaining on his Liverpool contract and he is set to see that contract out and leave on a free transfer next summer.

Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck was left furious with Markovic and claimed that the club did everything necessary to secure his services, only for him to turn them down. He said:

Our president and sports director did everything to convince Markovic. They waited until Liverpool lowered the price.

They almost did a crazy effort for the player, but it wasn’t enough. It’s his own fault that the deal fell through.

The 24-year-old would have got regular game time in the Belgian top flight but instead, he is most likely going to be wasting a valuable year in his career without playing any sort of football for Liverpool.
