Mignolet returns to Liverpool following Belgium withdrawal

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has returned to the club for treatment on an injury that he sustained during a training session with the Belgium national team, as per a report from the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds stopper was keen to depart the club on loan in the summer transfer window but Jurgen Klopp opted to retain his services, instead sending Loris Karius to Besiktas.

Mignolet is the established second choice goalkeeper at Anfield following the arrival of Alisson in the summer and he similarly deputises at an international level, as he sits behind Thibaut Courtois in the goalkeeping pecking order.

Nevertheless, Mignolet was forced to withdraw from the Belgium squad on Wednesday as a result of a finger injury. Roberto Martinez claimed that the experienced goalkeeper would be out of action for between “eight to 10 days”.

Following his withdrawal, Mignolet returned to Melwood for further examinations on his finger injury, with Liverpool now seemingly regarding the problem as minor.

It’s believed that Mignolet’s availability will be confirmed ahead of Liverpool’s encounter with Tottenham Hotspur next weekend, following the ongoing international break.
