Liverpool have been handed a boost ahead of their fixture against Southampton this weekend, with Manolo Gabbiadini likely to be sidelined for the visitors.
Saints boss Mark Hughes spoke to the media ahead of his side’s testing trip to Anfield at the weekend and delivered an update on the condition of Gabbiadini.
As quoted by Southampton’s official website, Hughes revealed that the Italian forward sustained a hamstring problem in Thursday morning’s training session.
We’ve got a couple of issues. Our main concern is Manolo, who unfortunately pulled up in training today. It looks like he has an issue with his lower hamstring behind the knee; we think it might be a neural thing but we’ll check in the morning to see if it’s settled down.
Southampton head to Liverpool with a significantly weakened pool of striking options. Danny Ings is ineligible for the fixture as he is contracted to the Reds until his move to Saints is made permanent in July next year.
Gabbiadini also looks set to add to Saints’ struggles up front, with his availability for the match on Merseyside currently up in the air.
Shane Long has been regularly starting for Southampton this season and with a testing fixture ahead of his side, Hughes now looks likely to continue fielding the Republic of Ireland international.
