Schalke chief confirms Liverpool target Meyer will leave

Liverpool appear to have been handed a huge boost in their bid to sign Max Meyer on a free transfer this summer.

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Germany international and are in with a good chance of landing him. Meyer’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he’ll be available for free.

Schalke have made efforts to keep Meyer at the club but it seems they are close to admitting defeat. Christian Heidel, the Bundesliga side’s sporting director, admitted that it’s looking likely that Meyer will depart this summer.

As quoted by Football London, Heidel delivered an update on Meyer’s situation:

At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer. Everything suggests that. At the moment there is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again.

Liverpool did not replace Philippe Coutinho with another playmaker in January and although they have since kicked on in what has been a fantastic season for the club, they may look to fill the void in the summer.

Meyer is also wanted by Arsenal, however, which could make for an interesting battle for the player’s signature.
