Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has insisted that James Milner is a better player than Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, according to a report on Goal.
Milner has been sensational for Jurgen Klopp’s side so far this season and was at his best once again as Liverpool defeated Paris Saint Germain 3-2 at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
With the arrival of Naby Keita and Fabinho during the summer transfer window, many expected Milner to play a limited role this season but he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
It is well known that Souness isn’t a fan of United midfielder Pogba and he believes that Milner is superior to the Frenchman. When asked which player was better, he said:
It isn’t even a question. Milner, every day of the week. He’s a proper player. Who would I rather play against? Paul Pogba. I don’t want to play against Milner.
But, with Pogba, it’s all about him and his game. He’s not going to stop me, he lets you play, and that’s one of the criticisms. Having the ball is only half of the game. A big part of being a top player, as he aspires to be, is you have to stop the guy you’re up against.
And that’s part of the captaincy. If I’m having a good day, that means I’m stopping the guy I’m against directly. You can’t pick and choose when you want to be bang at it.
Milner is adored by the Liverpool fans because of his passion and work rate and even though he is ageing, he still manages to find the energy to close down his opponent.
