The FA ask Liverpool to explain £1m payment to Man City in spying row

The FA have asked Liverpool to explain themselves following reports that they paid £1million to Manchester City after allegedly hacking into their scouting system, according to a report from the Times.

Liverpool employees, who had joined the club from City, allegedly logged in to their rivals’ Scout7 database on numerous occasions back in 2013, and City were furious when they found out.

The allegations against Liverpool are that employees Dave Fallows and Julian Ward used the login details of Man City scout Rob Newman to access his Scout7 account without his knowledge.

The Times report that Man City have already provided evidence of the ‘hacking’ to the FA, including reports from a forensic computer expert.

The £1m settlement, which was reportedly agreed without the FA’s involvement, could mean that the Reds avoid any further sanctions but if the FA decide that Liverpool breached their rule that ‘each club shall behave towards each other club and the league with the utmost good faith’ then there could be further punishment heading their way.

Even though the alleged incident happened over six years ago, there is still a worry that Liverpool could face further sanctions. Furthermore, the incident doesn’t really portray Liverpool in a positive light in terms of PR.

Without knowing all the facts, it’s tough to make any other real comment on the incident but it’s one that the club could do without as they’ve had a few issues in recent years that made them look bad in terms of PR, such as the transfer ban they got for an illegal approach to a young player.
