Joe Gomez out for the rest of the season and probably the World Cup

Joe Gomez will not play again this season, and he’s likely to miss the World Cup too, after undergoing surgery on his injured ankle.

The 20-year-old played through the pain during Liverpool’s draws with West Brom and Stoke City and it appears that he wasn’t quite aware of the seveirty of the injury.

However, the defender needed surgery to repair the issue and as such, he won’t be part of Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League final in Kiev at the end of May.

Gomez was also likely to be included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad after impressing in his recent appearances, but it looks unlikely that he’ll be fit enough to be part of the 23-man contingent that goes to Russia to represent England.

Whilst it was unlikey that Gomez would have started the Champions League final if fit, he would have been named as a substitute, but that will no longer be the case.

The news that Gomez will miss the World Cup could open the door for either Trent Alexander-Arnold or Nathaniel Clyne to be called up in his place, although neither offer the defensive versatility that Gomez would have provided to Southgate.
