Liverpool have announced that Joel Matip will be flying home early from the club’s tour of America due to the injury he picked up against Borussia Dortmund.
Matip was taken off during the first-half of the 3-1 defeat in Charlotte with a thigh injury and whilst Liverpool say that the injury “is not considered to be a long-term concern”, he will not be available to play in the games against Manchester United and Manchester City and as such, he’s been sent home to continue his rehabilitation at Melwood.
Matip spent the last portion of the 2017/18 season on the sidelines due to injury and he had only recently been declared fit to play, so his latest issue will come as a big blow as he was looking to nail down a regular starting position alongside Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
With Dejan Lovren not returning from his holiday until August 5th and with Matip now out injured, it looks likely that Joe Gomez will start the first game of the season, against West Ham. alongside Van Dijk.
